As a British citizen, you can avail visa exemption if you are planning to enter the country for a period not exceeding 15 days. Also, this waiver is applicable only when you are travelling for tourism or business purposes. Additionally, if you hold a different type of British nationality, such as British national (overseas), you cannot avail this option. You need to apply for a visa beforehand. An e-visa is a much-easier alternative when your stay period exceeds 15 days and you need to enter-exit Vietnam multiple times within a short span. However, do note that on an e-visa, your maximum allowable stay is 30 days.
A Vietnamese e-visa requires you to submit an online application. The process is entirely electronic and you just need to upload a scan of your passport and a photograph. If the visa is approved, you will get a visa approval letter on your registered email. You need to retain a copy of this document as this is not the exact visa. Once you present it, along with the other documents mentioned above, to the immigration office after arrival, he/she will stamp the visa on your passport. Vietnam does not have an option for visa on arrival. However, to clarify, a VOA does not require you to complete any process online prior to your travel plans. The actual visa is issued to you at the port of entry after verification of the required documents.
The normal processing time for a Vietnamese e-visa is around 2 days. However, we would advise you to lodge an application for an e-visa at least 7 days in advance. This is to avoid any unwanted surprises that may come up unexpectedly.
